Hi all,

I've received this email this morning, supposedly from
***@Virginmedia.com .....

....................................

Hello

We hope you're finding our new Virgin Media Mail much easier to use than
your old @virgin.net email account.

There's just one thing you need to do if you use and email client (like
Outlook Express or Windows Mail) to access your emails, to make sure
everything continues to work correctly.

You need to run a little software tool we've built to make some changes to
your email settings. It's quick and easy to do and you can download the
automated setup tool at
https://www.virginmedia.com/account/email-settings-change.php

To find out more about all the exciting new features of Virgin Media Mail,
there is lots more information at http://www.virginmedia.com/vmmailwelcome

Get in touch

Don't forget, you can always contact us if you have any questions or
problems, we'll be happy to help! You'll find our details at
http://www.virginmedia.com/contact.

Happy surfing!

The links given appear to be genuine, but I'm ultra-twitchy these days
especially about any message wanting me to download an 'automated setup
tool' !

Anyone know about this? I'm still accessing my email the same way I always
have using Mailwasher Pro to access my @virgin.net email account, and it's
still working just fine. Why would I want to change anything?

Confused.

so I assume it's genuine. As I don't use Microsoft Software I just
ignored it and everything still works as before. I think it's something
to do with the introduction of encryption of email requiring the
enabling of SSL in your email software. As I understand it this is
actually because VM are now using GoogleMail instead of their own email
server and it's something Google has introduced. This:

may explain it more competently and accuratly than I have tried to do.

You were right Alec. They've switched on SSL and changed the port numbers
for both sending and receiving email. I actually used Virgin's 'automated'
update software tool and , surprise surprise, it only did half the job on my
email account and ignored my wife's email account altogether! Can't they
get anything right?

I ended up referring to the manual settings section on their website and
completed the job myself. All seems to be working fine.
