Did p2p file sharing OR the WWW kill USENET?

Some of it could be down to ISP's, some don't provide usenet access now.
If users have to make their own provision some may not bother and I
imagine a lot of new users are unaware of it's existence. Also there are
forums/blogs/whatever for just about anything under the sun now so there
is less need for it now.

Just my take on it.

Not bad take, but it does seem that ISP's deliberately started to stifle it
even before WWW became the first port of call for info....

Usenet was obscure even when I started in the late 90s. Once I
eventually found out what it was, I discovered a great way of sharing
ideas. Back in the days of dial up it was good to be able to log on to
the server download messages and upload ones previously composed. All
this could be done for a very brief phone call and hence at low cost.

Even now, with a fast broadband connection I fine Usenet far easier to
use than any forum. It's the old VHS/Betamax thing Usenet is better,
but forums are more easily available.

It's only Usenet, no one dies.
My opinions, not the committee's, mine.

That's kind of the way I feel.

There is a flicker of life in some of the BT newsgroups though the
dialup ones are totally dead as you would expect. It's nice to see the
odd response from a BT Techie if someone has a problem, which suggests
someone monitors them, and BT Announce has regular updates throughout
the day on service status, detailing any service problems.

This is not a recommendation for BT BTW, just thought those of you who
are stiil here (there is someone else here - right?) might be interested.

Good to know someone is still using it. I miss the "chatroom" feel USENET had.
Made a lot of good friends, who over time, have dropped off the face of the
earth, seemingly.
